Kitesurf Season Clears the Fleet

Velika Plaža fills with kitesurfers from May to September, and the rental fleet thins with them. Lock in your car a couple of weeks before a July or August pickup.

Off the tarmac

Ada Bojana Sand Needs Four Wheels

Tarmac ends at the Ada Bojana bridge. The sand tracks to the fish restaurants and the river mouth chew tyres on two-wheel-drive cars, book a Land Rover or Stonic if this is on your list.

Albanian border

Sukobin Is the Quiet Border

The Sukobin-Muriqan crossing to Albania sits 20 minutes south of town and rarely has more than two cars ahead of you. Albanian Green Card included at booking when you mention the Shkodër trip.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know before you book.

A valid driving licence and passport or national ID. A credit card is not required on any car on the platform — cash, debit card and crypto are accepted at the supplier. Licences without Latin characters also require an International Driving Permit.

Suppliers price cross-border travel as a paid permit in three tiers, and Ulcinj is the rare base where the middle tier is the natural pick rather than an upgrade. Tier 1 covers Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia (no Green Card needed), suited to a Trebinje run or a Croatia hop via Debeli Brijeg. Tier 2 adds Albania and Kosovo with a Green Card provided, and from Ulcinj that means the Sukobin-Muriqan crossing 12 km south, Shkodër in 30 minutes, and Tirana reachable in around 2 hours 30. Most guests here choose Tier 2 because the Albanian day trip is part of why they pick Ulcinj over Bar or Budva. Tier 3 bundles the full neighbour set with Macedonia, all EU countries and Switzerland (Green Card provided), useful if your itinerary loops further afield. Tick the right tier at booking and the Green Card waits in the glovebox at pickup.

Age and required driving experience vary by vehicle. The lowest cars on the platform are available from 18+ years old with 1+ years driving experience — filter by your age and experience to see the cars open to you.

Every booking includes the free Minimum (third-party liability) cover with a typical €100 deposit and VAT. Insurance upgrades are paid extras: Basic, Full, and a no-deposit Full Plus. Unlimited mileage is included on most cars (376 of around 380); each listing shows the cover, mileage policy and any extras before you confirm.

Confirmed extras suit the cross-border driver and the day-tripper crowd that defines Ulcinj. A wireless hotspot or local SIM-card keeps you on Montenegrin data once you cross at Sukobin, avoiding Albanian roaming charges on a Shkodër day. Three sizes of child seat are stocked for families heading to Velika Plaža or Ada Bojana. An electric scooter with charger handles the stepped lanes inside Stari Grad fortress where cars are awkward. Roof racks carry beach gear down to the Bojana, while ski and snowboard racks are the option for guests pairing an Ulcinj coast week with a winter weekend up at Kolasin or Žabljak. Theft Protection, Personal Accident Insurance, and a Winter Pack round out the list. Add what you need at the booking stage so the agent has everything fitted at pickup.

Both make practical sense given the way Ulcinj is actually used. Theft Protection is worth it if you plan long beach days at Ada Bojana, the unpaved Sas fortress turn-off above town, or the lay-bys along the Bojana river road, all places where the car sits unattended for hours away from busy parking. Personal Accident Insurance is sensible cover for the rough access roads behind Velika Plaža, the gravel spurs out to Valdanos, and the Albanian secondary roads beyond the Sukobin crossing where surfaces change without warning. Neither is mandatory, the supplier explains the cap and the day rate at the desk, decide on the spot.

Free cancellation is available on selected cars (around 176 of approximately 380, marked clearly in the search results). On those cars, the full advance payment is refunded if you cancel more than 24 hours before pickup; cancellations within 24 hours of pickup are non-refundable.

Most cars hold a €100 deposit at pickup. 47 cars on the platform require no deposit at all, and a further 124 offer a no-deposit option as a paid service. Choosing the Full Plus insurance tier also waives the deposit. The exact amount (if any) is shown clearly before you book.
